One of the things we initially liked about our Social Print Experiment was the tiny space we had found, just slightly larger than the press itself. We called it the Highly Optimized Production Space (HOPS) but it’s also known as the Extremely Tight Hard To Work Space (no acronym there). Work coming off the press is stacked around what little space we have, which has made it very difficult to be streamlined in our production. After a few weeks of discussion, we made the decision to move to somewhere bigger.
On June 10th, we’ll pick up our bags and move to more spacious digs, about 800 square feet in size, located about 10 miles from our current location. Of course, moving the press means we’ll be down for two days, but the larger space gives us more room for the equipment we have to shuffle around when we do an envelope job; or do our production work on the oversized projects. The good news is that the rent is about the same as what we were paying – $550 a month now, and the landlord pays for electricity as part of the agreement, so our cost there is very fixed.
I also think we’ll see more trade work come in, now that we are not located next door to a commercial printer, based upon some comments that Andrew has run into while visiting other printers around town. The products we want to sell, most other digital printing companies cannot do, but the printers we’ve talked with had some uneasiness sending us work because of our location. The symbiosis we sought there may have had a detrimental effect on business from that niche.
So, we will be shut down for two days while we move, but the end result is that we’ll be more efficient and less cramped in our new print production space.
